Results from The First Rounds Of Field TrialsThe rig first saw action at the Gettysburg Orphanage in April 2011. We used the Zoom H4n with an external dynamic microphone (Shure SM58 knock-off) and one of the Audio Technica AT2020's. The one thing that became immediately clear is how much of a problem noise contamination was going to be.The Gettysburg Orphanage is not that big to start with, and 19th century architecture was not particularly concerned with acoustically isolating floors of the house from each other. The focus of the investigation was two areas in the basement, "the pit" and the large room in the front of the building at the bottom of the stairs. The increased sensitivity was a mixed blessing, the good news was that we could hear everything! The bad news was that we could hear EVERYTHING. That included whoever was doing the other session, people up at base camp, and even people out on the street.Read More
