Texas Instruments (NASDAQ, TXN) is a designer, manufacturer, and supplier of semiconductors, analog integrated circuits and embedded processors. Founded in 1930, it has its corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas. It is the third largest manufacturer of semiconductors worldwide after Intel and Samsung. In addition, it is second largest supplier of chips for cellular phones after Qualcomm and the largest manufacturer of digital signal processors (DSPs) and analog semiconductors. It belongs to the Top 20 semiconductor producing companies in the world. Texas Instruments was the result of the reorganization of Geophysical Service, a company that produced equipment for use in the seismic industry as well as defense electronics. It started its research in transistors in the early part of the 1950s and produced the world's first commercial silicon transistor in 1954. It also designed and manufactured the first transistor radio and Jack Kirby invented the integrated circuit in 1958 while working at the TI's Central Research Labs. In 1961, it developed the first integrated-circuit based computer for the US Air Force. Aside from that, TI also gave the world the infrared technology as well as radar systems and guidance and control systems for missiles and bombs. In 1967, the company also introduced the handheld calculator. The company operates in three divisions namely semiconductors, Educational Technology, and Digital Light Processing. Semiconductors account for approximately 96% of the company's revenues. Its semiconductor products include digital signal processors in the TMS320 Series, high-speed digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters, power management solutions, and high performance analog circuits. Digital Light processing is the trademark of every Texas Instruments product from televisions, video projectors, and digital antenna. The company also produces a range of calculators with the TI-30 being one of the most popular early calculators. It also manufactured a line of graphing calculators. It also sells some financial calculators in its website. Texas Instruments has been recognized in the industry by different organizations. For 12 straight years, it has been listed in Fortune's "World's Most Admired Companies." From 2006 to 2015, the National Association for Female Executives named Texas Instruments as one of the "Top Companies for Executive Women." From 2012 to 2014, the company has been listed in Thomson Reuters' "Top 100 Global Innovators." For nine consecutive years, Texas Instrument was part of the North America Component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Among its major competitors are Maxim Integrated, NXP, and Nordic.
