Netflix Summary Information

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) is an American media company that provides online streaming television shows and movies in several dozen countries, as well as a DVD-by-mail service. Netflix was founded in Scotts Valley, California (CA) in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. The idea of a subscription-based DVD rental service with no due dates or late fees came to Hastings after he had to pay $40 for an overdue rental of Apollo 13. After its founding, the company grew rapidly, and by 2007 Netflix had delivered its billionth DVD. At that time, Netflix started to shift from its DVD rental model to an increasingly popular online streaming service. Netflix has also played a prominent role in independent film distribution and in producing original content. Starting in 2011, Netflix started producing its own series, including hits House of Cards, Daredevil, Orange Is the New Black, and Arrested Development. Netflix currently has over 60M subscribers in more than 40 countries. Netflix's top competitors include online media companies like Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, and HBO, as well as DVD rental services like Redbox.
