Duolingo: 7 tips to make learning a new language on Duolingo much easiershutterstockDuolingo is a simple and fun way to get started learning the basics of a new language.I've been using the app for a little over a year now to teach myself French. I'm no master just yet, but I've learned a lot about the language, and the app itselfThere are several ways to tweak the Duolingo app to make it more efficient for you - several of these tips really do make it easier to learn the language you're trying to understand. Here are 7 simple ways to better learn a new language on Duolingo:1. Set your daily goal to "casual" so you're responsible for only one lesson per day.Screencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderSetting your daily goal to casual makes it so you only need to do one lesson per day to keep maintain a streak, making it easier to keep a streak.A streak in Duolingo is exactly what it sounds like: If you complete one lesson per day for consecutive days, you start a streak. If you maintain your streak for 10 days, 20 days, 30 days, or beyond, you'll get a prize.Prizes usually in the form of "lingots," Duolingo's in-app currency used to purchase in-app power-ups, bonus skill levels, and fun little features related to the app's owl mascot, Duo. So it's beneficial to maintain your streak for as long as possible. That's why it's smart to set your goals to just one lesson per day. It's a simple mental trick: The fewer lessons you're on the hook for, the less likely you are to shirk off your studies due to laziness. You can always do more than one lesson, but after one lesson, the app counts your daily goal as complete.2. Beware of easy grammatical missteps such as plural versus singular, masculine versus feminine.Screencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderThis is both a Duolingo tip and a language-learning tip in general. In learning a language, it's pretty easy to confuse singular and plural, and masculine and feminine terms, but Duolingo also tries to confuse you sometimes: It'll present you with multiple similar options. This has tripped me up plenty of times, where I'll choose one option too quickly. In general, just be careful about reading all of the available options before making a decision.Failing a lesson isn't the worst thing in the world - you'll just redo it until you get it right - but if you want to get better at learning a language, and do it efficiently, be careful about reading every question fully before responding.3. Switching to other apps may reload your lesson on Duolingo, which can make you lose your progress.Screencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderThere is a workaround, however, though it's not very convenient: If you're in the middle of a session but you switch to another app, simply access Duolingo from the "recents" section on your smartphone (or multi-tasking on an iPhone). If you attempt to return to the Duolingo app by pressing the app's icon, it may reload the lesson and you may lose your progress on that lesson. Duolingo: I've been learning French on the Duolingo app for over a year now - here's what it's like to use the appScreencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderMany often count learning a new language among their New Year's resolutions, and given how we live in the digital age, many require an app for such a task. Enter Duolingo. The platform is one of the most popular language-learning apps in the world with 23 languages available and several more in the works. After getting several recommendations to use Duolingo for learning a language, I embarked on teaching myself French in 2016. Just over one year later, I may not be a master at French, but I've learned a lot about the language, and the app itself. Here's a bit about my experience with Duolingo and some advice on how to tackle learning a new language using the app. It took me a little over a year to complete the entire courseScreencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderI started learning French on Duolingo in October 2016 and completed the entire course about two weeks ago. I am currently at 66% proficiency, according to the app.I chose French because Czech wasn't availableScreencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderI decided to start using Duolingo ahead of a trip to Prague. I'd hoped to learn a few Czech phrases before my trip, but Czech wasn't available at that time. Having already downloaded the app, I decided to study French, which is the language I studied in college. Like many, I didn't remember anything from my college study. Duolingo added a Czech course in September 2017, which I may investigate at a later time. My level of study is currently set to "Serious"Screencap: Fionna Agomuoh/Business InsiderEvery lesson in the Duolingo app gives you experience points (XP). You get 10 XP per lesson, but you can choose how many lessons you want per day. Casual is one lesson per day, Regular is two, Serious is three, and Insane is five lessons in a day. I have my daily goal set to Serious, which requires completing three lessons daily, but I'll often do more lessons if I have the time, typically around five or six. At one point I had my daily goal set to Insane, but I found I'd slack off when I knew I was on the hook for five lessons a day. See the rest of the story at Business InsiderBusiness Insider

Duolingo Summary Information

Duolingo, Inc. is a privately-held company which is a provider of a language-learning platform that allows users to learn foreign languages by translating text. It is a free language-learning platform that includes a language-learning website and app along with a crowd-sourced text translation platform and a language proficiency assessment center. Duolingo is ad-free and offers all its language courses free-of-charge. The language-learning website and app offer over 50 different language courses across 23 languages, almost 30 additional courses are in development. The app is available on iOS, Android, Windows 8 and 10 platforms with over 100 million registered users worldwide. The project was started in Pittsburgh, by Carnegie Mellon University professor Luis von Ahn (creator of reCAPTCHA) and his graduate student Severin Hacker, and then developed along with Antonio Navas, Vicki Cheung, Marcel Uekermann, Brendan Meeder, Hector Villafuerte, and Jose Fuentes. Inspiration for Duolingo comes from two places. Luis von Ahn wanted to create another program that served two purposes in one, what he calls a "twofer." Duolingo does this by teaching its users a foreign language while having them translate simple phrases in documents. Forbes staff member Parmy Olson revealed the other incentive towards creating Duolingo. Von Ahn was born in Guatemala and saw how expensive it was for people in his community to learn English. Severin Hacker, co-founder of Duolingo, and Von Ahn, believed that "free education will really change the world," and wanted to supply the people an outlet to do so. The project was originally sponsored by Luis Von Ahn's McArthur Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Grant. Additional funding was later received in the form of investments from Union Square Venturces, and actor Ashton Kutcher's firm, A-Grade Investments. Duolingo started its private beta in November, 2011 and accumulated a waiting list of more than 300,000 users. In June 19, 2012, Duolingo launched for the general public. Due to popular interest, Duoligo has received many investments including $20 million Series C round of investment led by Kleiner Caufield & Byers. Duolingo has 42 staff members, of whom many were Google employees, and operates from the office in the Pittsburgh neighbourhood of Shadyside near Carnegie Mellon's campus. In November, 2013, Duolingo released its first iOS app which is a free download and is compatible with most iPhone, iPad, and iPod devices. In May 29, 2013, Duolingo released its first Android app, which was downloaded over a million times in the first three weeks and quickly became the number 1 education app in the Play Store. Core services of the platform are available for free. Duolingo does not use any advertising and there are no subscription fees for the tutorials. To earn money, Duolingo employs a crowd-sourced business model, where members of the public are invited to translate content and vote on translations. The content comes from organizations that pay Duolingo to translate it. Industry competitors include Babbel, Rosetta Stone, and memrise. Luis Von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, Inc., has an 87% approval rating in Owler.

Duolingo's Co-Founder & CEO, Luis von Ahn, currently has an approval rating of 56%. Duolingo's primary competitors are  Memrise Babbel Voxy.
